THE OWYHEE CANYONLANDS CAMPAIGN
The Owyhee Canyonlands Campaign is a statewide effort to permanently protect the most special and threatened places in Oregon’s Owyhee Canyonlands.
Deep, broad support
Support for protecting this special place spans Malheur County, the entire state of Oregon and beyond. The Owyhee Canyonlands Campaign is supported by many voices calling for permanent protection of this Oregon treasure, including conservation groups, businesses, Malheur County-based Friends of the Owyhee, and Oregonians across the state. Thousands of people have added their voices to the effort calling for the protect the Owyhee area, with more supporters joining every day.
A wild, intact, thriving Owyhee Canyonlands
The campaign envisions a future for the Owyhee where plant and animal communities flourish, wide-open spaces and recreational opportunities abound and local communities thrive. Future generations will inherit the same beauty and solitude that we find in Oregon’s Owyhee Canyonlands today.
Permanently protecting the most special places within the Owyhee Canyonlands would safeguard its deep, red-rock canyons, rolling plains, wild rivers and ample recreational opportunities for future generations. It would protect the area’s fascinating geology, rich ancient history, healthy wildlife habitat and unique ecology. Extractive uses that would permanently damage these pristine places would not be allowed, while activities like fishing, boating, hunting and hiking would continue. Working farms and ranches would continue to operate. We’re working to have the foresight to prevent the sort of development and impacts that have quickly taken hold in other areas of the West in the most unique and ecologically significant areas of the Owyhee. The Owyhee Canyonlands deserve protection. A process to create a pragmatic and collaborative proposal is underway, which would protect the most special and threated public lands and water in Malheur County and the Owyhee Canyonlands, as well as the area’s rural way of life.
